Diablo III

Yesterday, on June 28th 2008, Blizzard announced Diablo III. On their site, they have some pretty sweet videos, and they let me fondly remember the many hours spent on playing Diablo and Diablo II. After a long time of uncertainty and rumors flying high (and with Hellgate London being hailed as the third Diablo), it's nice to actually have an official reveal by the creators themselves.

Much like Starcraft II, I can imagine this to cause a huge upstir in the old gaming community. Among that things like the game having been announced for only one day, and some people already complaining about it.

Two thoughts popped into my head while looking at the various info that has already been released. Blizzard has built up such a successful core of games that they just continue on with those. And the games still turn out great. There's Starcraft, Warcraft, and Diablo, and that's pretty much it. My other favorite gaming company, Bioware, wouldn't be able to pull something like that off. Yes, their games are also milestones, and Baldur's Gate is a game that serious gamers must have heard of, but their games never breach the second installment, and some (such as my favorite game of all time, Planescape: Torment) don't even reach it.

The second thing is that due to the high standards, Blizzard can announce a game, and still work on it for more than a year. Fans might get impatient, and angry at Blizzard, but in the end, the games will be so well designed and balanced that they'll be even better than sliced bread.

So Blizzard has made me add Diablo III next to StarCraft II (and some other games) onto my wish list.
