After years of medieval fantasy, I was starting to get bored with it, and wanted to find something new. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I remembered some mystical fascination coming from Steampunk, and so I discovered it as a very interesting genre for me. This led to a search for games with this genre, later movies and stories, and then I found something very nice: The German Magazine GEO Epoche. It's a scientific magazine dealing with history, and every issue picks out a different time period. Like, say, the industrial revolution.
My interest in steampunk sparked somewhere around the time that issue came out, so I can't say how much it has influenced me in looking at this genre. But it has proven to be a priceless fond of knowledge about this time period, and even came with a DVD ith three documentaries (The building of the Alvah Crocker tunnel, the invention of nitroglycerin by Alfred Nobel, and the invention and story of the Hunley). Needless to say, next to learning quite a bit about history, I also found my interest was correct.
But what really gave the spark to make steampunk my number one genre of choice is the fabulous anime "Steamboy" by Katsuhiro Otomo. While the story might be a bit shallow, the animation and art is brilliant, and hands out loads of nice eyecandy in terms of citiscapes machinery.
So really, I'm thinking that after years of fantasy, I'm hoping to be able to play some good steampunk.
